iomart Hosting provides flexible hosting for Glasgow Life and the Science Museum
Two of the UK’s most recognised cultural organisations have been explaining why they use iomart Hosting to ensure round-the-clock online availability.
Glasgow Life, the organisation that delivers world class cultural, artistic and leisure services to Glasgow, and the Science Museum in London, both use iomart Hosting for web support.
iomart Hosting hosts not only the main Glasgow Life website but also the cultural and artistic events portal for the whole of the city, a series of theatre and leisure portals plus several websites that produce intense spikes of traffic at specific times of the year including the World Pipe Band Championships, Glasgow’s Hogmanay and Aye Write.
Since the new Glasgow Life web portal was launched in June 2010 it has received over 13 million unique visitors. It is hosted on a dedicated platform on a SharePoint 2010 server with SQL in one of iomart’s fully owned and managed UK data centres.
John Tolland, ICT Manager for Glasgow Life, explains: “We decided to go for a dedicated server rather than a cloud-based option because we felt this would give us more control over the platform. It also meant that the appropriate processor and memory resources that we needed weren’t shared with anyone else, they were totally dedicated to us.”
Hosting externally means that the service to Glasgow Life and its technical staff is largely transparent. Any changes, like adding backup onto the existing contract, have been straightforward to make.
John explains: “Costs for the service from iomart Hosting are lower than we could have achieved in-house for the same level of service and any changes to the contract like the adding of backup have been handled seamlessly.”
The Science Museum in South Kensington, London, turned to iomart Hosting for cloud hosting to ensure reliability and scalability for its online climate change game Rizk. The museum uses iomart’s Cloudsure platform which is configured and managed for customers by fully VMware certified technicians with 24/7 technical support.
Alex Hendry, senior project manager for the Science Museum’s web team, said: “We knew that using an external host initially was a good way to build resilience and cope with unexpected spikes in traffic without compromising our core services.
iomart Hosting was able to support the technical approach that had been suggested by our development agency Playerthree and it also offered a flexible approach to hosting that would allow us to adapt our plans around varying usage levels.”
Rizk was launched in 2011 as part of ‘Climate Changing,’ the Science Museum’s three-year series of thought-provoking events, exhibitions and installations. By March this year it had over 2 million plays via the main website and seeded versions of the game.
Alex Hendry says: “Rizk was launched over a year ago but is still attracting large audiences. iomart Hosting provided the flexible and scalable hosting and high availability that we needed to cope with peaks in demand. iomart Hosting has provided us with a good value service that has helped us minimise the risk to our internal infrastructure.”
