Carbon footprint - keeping customers updated
The issue of Green IT and Carbon Footprint is never far from the front pages at the moment, and as the world's Governments seek to introduce legislative carbon accounting in order to achieve their publicly quoted CO² reduction targets, it is a subject that is not going to disappear sometime soon.
Eventually, carbon reduction will affect every business and we will all be held to account for our organisation's footprints. With this in mind, and to assist our customers with their energy efficiency planning, iomart Hosting has included a personal CO² Emissions display (as generated by individual customer servers) in our customer control panel, and we believe that we are the first managed hosting company to provide such data. Work is now in hand to calculate a more complete emission's picture by including proportional data from the Data Centre Infrastructure e.g. cooling.
In addition to CO² Emissions, the control panel enables our customers to actively monitor the amount of power and bandwidth that their servers and racks are consuming. The control panel contains current, historic and predicted usage figures for ease of management planning.
This information can be used by our clients to manage their server and rack estate more effectively and assist them with their energy efficiently and cost reduction modelling. Targets for power reduction can only be set if consumption can be accurately measured and apportioned. The data that our control panel provides our clients with can be used to determine inefficient operating practises, hardware et cetera allowing them to make informed cost saving decisions.
The development of the customer control panel led to iomart Hosting receiving an award nomination as the Environmental Innovator of the Year in the 2009 PC Pro Awards.
