Winners!...All the Way

The Second Green IT Awards were attended by record numbers, all seeking the coveted prizes on display and to reinforce a commitment to the environment that has become the trademark of these exceptional organisations

More than 200 guests gathered at London Zoo on the 19th May as the second Green IT Awards' winners - Green IT magazine's very own annual awards event - were announced. And what a night of celebrations it was for those who triumphed, as well as for those who made it to the finals.

On the night, the outstanding products, projects and talent were duly celebrated at the ceremony, designed to highlight and reward the excellent work that is being done in this essential and increasingly recognised area.

The pursuit of green principles and standards has never been greater than it is today - and it is a trend that is accelerating all the time. The awards were a clear acknowledgement of that fact and the remarkable achievements of those present in delivering the solutions and thinking that are playing their part in helping to preserve and transform the environmental landscape.

The importance of the evening - sponsored by iomart Hosting, DECC and BCS, The Chartered Institute of IT - was underlined by the presence of Catalina McGregor, Green IT liaison officer at the United Nations. She works with a number of International climate change and environmental groups, including Global Action Plan European Leaders in IT (ELIT), The US EPEAT Green Electronics Council and the UK WEEE Directive sub group for the re-use and resale of electronic goods.

Best known in the UK as the founder of the Government's Chief Information Officers (CIO) and Chief Technology Officers (CTO) Council Green ICT Delivery Unit, she has served three consecutive appointments to the Ministry of Defence.

As for the winners in each of the 21 categories, these were decided by a judging panel and the votes of the readers of Green IT magazine; the results can be seen below. So congratulations to all this year's winners and we trust they will return to defend their titles in 2012.

The evening started with a drinks reception at the Lion Terrace, which allowed everyone to catch up with old friends and start to make new ones, while at the same time take in some of the amazing animals at the Zoo. After Catalina McGregor's thought-provoking welcome speech and some insightful comments on green IT from Bob Harvey, vice president of BCS, The Chartered institute for IT, the assembled enjoyed a three-course dinner. They were also entertained by comedian Alistair Barrie who, in a hugely engaging set, managed to discuss everything from the joys of shopping with children to the General Election. No one escaped his sharp eye and even sharper wit.

The 2011 awards ceremony then commenced, and the results of the voting and judges' deliberations were revealed.

Our congratulations to everyone involved. Noticeable winners included Raritan, winners of the Over 100 employees project Category for their work with eBay; to 1E, who walked away with the Product of the Year award; and to nlyte Software, winner of the Editor's Choice category.

The Green IT Awards 2012 will take place in April next year, during Earth Week, and the organisers are already working on how to make that event even better. Well done to all who took part this year and congratulations once again to all the winners.
